Social life involves a continual standoff between the forces of social control that produce that order and the counter-forces that produce deviance. The problem of social control is especially true for societies that are large, complex, and stratified (characterized by inequality) Population size: large pops are more difficult to organize due to a decrease in face-to-face contact, which weakens solidarity. Differentiation: differentiations create problems for social control: How are people in diff subcultures, neighborhoods, communities, regions, Inequality etc to be organized: as pops grow and people do diff tings, its inevitable that some people get more money, power, and prestige than others. Gives rise to conflicts and tension: w/out gov to exert social control society would be in trouble. Government: necessary to maintain control in large, differentiated, stratified societies, external. Consists of large bureaucracies w/ people in offices who"re authorized to exert control.
