The systematic study of human society (macro) and social interaction (micro). Macro: things like birth rates compared to china, migration and border security/labor markets. Sociology is both a hard scientific endeavor and a lense through which to see the world. Weak ties lead to suicide and strong ties lead to suicide. Level of integrations (nature of religion) individual decision to kill yourself is deterministic by society as well not totally free will. Social structure: provides opportunities and constraints on our behavior in many ways. Networks pattern our behavior in a myriad of ways we don"t know. Granovetter: weak ties are valuable because they yield new information. Weak ties link you to the rest of the world. Strong ties are more like us (homophily) (less novel information) We tend to have more weak ties. (men especially) 6. 5 billion people, yet the average distance between any two randomly selected people is 6 steps (links).
