Document Summary

Heredity is the transmission of traits from one generation to the next. Variation is demonstrated by the differences in appearance that offspring show from parents and siblings. Genetics is the study of heredity and variation. Concept 1: offspring acquire genes form parents by inheriting chromosomes. Particular traits are not inherited, rather the genes that are actually inherited. Genes are the units of heredity that are made up of dna. They are passed to the next generation via gametes (sperm and egg) Humans have 46 chromosomes in their somatic cells (23 pairs) Somatic cells are al cells of the body except gametes. Locus is a genes specific location on a chromosome. Asexual reproduction is a single individual who passes all of its genes to its offspring without the fusion of gametes (produce genetically identical offspring) Clone is a group of genetically identical individuals from the same parent.
