Emotion is an immediate, specific negative or positive response to an environmental event or internal thought. A feeling that is based on cognitive appraisal of the situation and interpretation of bodily states (i"m scared) Mood is long lasting emotional states: primary vs. secondary emotions - general definition. Primary emotions are emotions shared across cultures that essentially natural (anger, fear, happiness, sadness) Secondary emotions are blends of primary emotion (anticipation= excitement and nervousness, guilt, remorse, etc. ) Valence is negative and positive (sad and upset vs excited and relax) Level of arousal is high or low activation (calm and sad are low, happy, stressed, upset and nervous are high: circumplex map of emotion. Theorizes that emotions can be categorized by valence and level of arousal: emotions and limbic system. The limbic system: term now loosely used when referring to emotions because many of the structures are important but not central.
