Spread of renaissance: spread north from italy, into holy roman empire, france, holland, england, central europe, why is he called leonardo da vinchi. Because he was illegitimate son, he couldn"t take his fathers last name: what was significant about his statues. He lived well with his father and stepmother but because he was a bastard he did not have the same privileges and rights. Spain and portugal divide up the world: treaty of tordesilla, drawn up by the pope, drawn a line, ignores the line, everything east of the line goes to portugal, west of the line goes to spain. Conquistadors: superior weapons, aztec empire 1516, hernan cortes, conquers the aztec empire, francisco pizzaro, conquers inca empire 1535. European colonies in the americas: spain- largest, portugal- brazil, french- islands in caribbean/ central north america, english- islands/ eastern coast of north america, plantation economies, takes over islands and planes crops from old world.
