Historically in the Western World, sexuality varied between different religions. Judaic
religions called for gender roles to be highly specialized and sex within marriage was more than
for reproduction. Christianity developed during a time of social instability, so sex between
marriage was seen as sinful. Paul of Tarus, Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, all Christian writers
said this and that sex was only for procreation. Eve and Mary brought views of sexuality. Mary
was seen as a pure angel that valued courtly love. Eve was seen as evil and sinful, allowing for
hatred to be towards women.
The Victorian Era had very strong gender roles. Women were viewed as asexual and their
duties were to fulfill family spirits and provide warm homes for their husbands. The women were
ladylike and delicate. Despite this, prostitution came about during this time and men visited these
prostitutes because of economic necessity and sexual relationships. When slavery flourished,
gender roles were even more extreme and the Madonna-whore dichotomy allowed slaves no
right to physical property.
During World War I, equality of gender roles came to be. While men went to war,
women started to work. The men at war were exposed to more of an open sexuality. Romantic
movies with sex symbols came out during this time. Also, this was the time during the roaring
20s so young women that were single and of middle class wore short dresses and danced.
However, these women avoided premarital sex. After WW2, the women started to live in the
suburbs and their husbands came back from war. The women appeared to be happy and content
via the media. The women returned to their homes to provide for the family while men went to
work again. Fashion showed women in full skirts and dresses and movies showed conformity in
which married couples were in separate beds. Kinsey book during time, sex behavior,
