Document Summary

Chapter 2:the basics of life: [matter, energy, chemical reactions] Concept 2. 1:- all life is composed of chemicals (matter) and use chemicals to generate energy. Living things use matter and energy to carry out all the activities of life such as growth, reproduction etc. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space (or has volume). The two general types of energy are. Energy is the ability to do work: kinetic energy = energy of motion. Potential energy = stored energy or energy of position. Potential energy can be converted to kinetic energy. Chemical energy = potential energy stored in chemicals. : fuel mechanical energy = energy associated with machines or things in motion [fig 2. 2] Electrical energy = energy due to flow of charged particles. Nuclear energy = energy resulting from the reactions in the atomic nucleus. Radiant energy = usually in form of heat, but also x-radiation and microwaves.
