BIOL 021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Nervous Tissue, Homeostasis, Melanin
Document Summary
Always check the blackboard to see if there are any announcements. Tissue: a group of similar cells and extracellular substance that have combined to perform a single function. Avascular - has no directive blood supply and nutrients. Simple squamous epithelium is on the outside where the connective tissue is on the inside. Protective layer for protecting against infections and viruses. Squamous cells - good at absorption and diffusion. Fat cells (adipocytes) lipid storage, keep us warm, cushion internal organs, Hyaline cartilage is the most common types of cartilage, found on ends of bones. Elastic cartilage - allows things to move and go back in place (ears, nose) Fibrocartilage - packed with collagen, found where extra strength is needed, cushions knee joints, forms discs between vertebra. Fluid connective tissues, reach all parts of our body. Don t have fi(cid:271)ers (cid:271)ut have proteins that a(cid:272)t like fi(cid:271)ers. Shape allows for more surface area to carry more oxygen.
