ENVS 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Exclusive Economic Zone, Nautical Mile
Document Summary
Exclusive economic zones (eezs) are areas of coastal water and seabed that are within a certain distance of a country"s coastline (200 nmi). This zone is considered exclusive since the country has claims over it for. In the cases where these exclusive economic zones overlap, the states will set a maritime boundary and it goes to the nearest state. The idea of eezs started becoming an acceptable idea in the late 20th century. It originated in the united states in 1945. Peru were the first countries who claimed maritime zones. 1982 was the year the un convention on the law of the sea adopted the eez. Eezs are important because it is the fundamental law set in place that regulates the rights that each country or state has regarding marine resources. Without exclusive economic zones, lots of conflict would arise.
