GEOG 010 Lecture 14: Glacial Deposition
Document Summary
Glaciers influence the surface configuration of the earth through erosion since the ice scrapes up soil and rock as it passes over the ground of the earth. This loose rock and soil sediment are incorporated into the moving glacier by partial melting and refreezing. Another erosional process from glaciers involved the abrasive action of the held rock and sediment held by the ice on the surface underneath the glacier. Scouring causes scratch-like marks on various rock surfaces. Another way glacier influences the earth"s surface through erosion is through the process of plucking. Plucking is the process when particle detach from the moving glacial ice. The ice of the glaciers freeze inside the rock surface cracks, and the body of the glacial ice moves material around and pulls out the ice in the cracks. Glacial deposition is the settling of sediments left behind by moving glaciers.
