Document Summary

Good drainage benefits pedogenic process by enhancing illuviation and eluviation, which are responsible for the development of soil horizons. Time also influences pedogenesis since many soil processes become steady state overtime since they reach maturity. One example of a pedogenic process is laterization. Laterization is a process common to soils in tropical and subtropical environments. In this process, soils and rocks are depleted of soluble substances and are enriched with insoluble substances. Another process is podzolization, which is associated with humid cold climates and coniferous vegetation. Soil solutions involved are strongly acidic, which enhances the process of eluviation and leaching. This process results in a sub-layer that is white to gray and composed of silica sand. Calcification is another process when evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation and causes the upward movement of dissolved alkaline sounds from the groundwater. Additionally, the movement of rainwater causes a downward movement of the salt.
