Within a month of the election the south seceded. Establishment of the confederate state of america. Fort sumter surrendered after being bombarded for 36 hours. Northern vs south : advantages and disadvantages. Fighting an offensive war in enemy territory . Fighting on familiar terrain with a friendly civilian population. Lack of liquid financial resources - shortage of disposable wealth. All wealth was in land, slaves and cotton and was tough to convert those resources for tools of war.
