Gerontology: scientific study of biological, psychological, and social aspects of aging (1904 by an immunologist) Social gerontology: focus on health, family dynamics, retirement, care of frail elderly, widowhood. Elderly is offensive, more old and fragile than elder . Grandparents (a person who has a child around 15, and their child has another child doesn"t mean they are old grandparents) / retirees (people can retire at 30 if they hit it big with lots of money) Well elders, somewhat impaired elders frail elderly. Class and gender are influences - class and gender do influences aging. Women do worry because it can mean they are ignore or not hired. Current shift to positive rather than negative. Not just the individual, but our society! Generation = kinship linkages (sometimes used to have same meaning as cohort) Group of persons experiencing the same event within same time period.
