For descartes, the word i refers to myself, which is the mind attached to the body. For anscombe, the word i has a very different interpretation. Example #1: john smith shot himself: here, the word himself is the direct reflexive pronoun, it refers back to the person named in the subject (john smith) Conclusion: the sentence: i is a word that each person uses in speaking about himself. So the main problem is that you can"t explain a word using that word, yet that is exactly what we do with the word i. Idea #2: anscombe believed each person should refer to themselves as a . 2nd person: b-z is how everyone else refers to that person: letter appears on the back and on top of the chest of the person. For anscombe, i users acquire knowledge not from observation: knowledge comes from posture and physical movement.
