Goes to church to find peace and warmth in her life. Washes clothes for a living; is the breadwinner . They also feel bad that sykes puts her in a bad position. He is irresponsible and abusive; he takes his delia for granted. He cheats on delia with bigger women (beth) He let the snake loose so that it could kill delia. Older man in town who owns a shop. Hangs out on the porch with other men from town. Narrator also shows the townspeople"s perspective on delia"s situation with sykes. Takes place in florida in the 1920s. Story is told over a period of weeks (spring - july/august) Delia goes through a transformation; her act of defiance against sykes makes her seen as powerful and intimidating. Sykes is not used to delia being this way, so he runs away from his troubles like a coward.
