Scientific study of the connection between the individual and the social structure they live in (outside world) Social structure: patterns in human behavior and our relationships with each other. The way our society is organized (in terms of race, culture, sexuality, etc) Social construction: idea or practice that a group of people agree exists; maintained over time by people taking its existence for granted (ex): social construction: all women are nurturing mothers. Not all women want to be mothers (ex): social construction: race. Before the 1500s, humans did not look at each other in terms of race. Idea of race created for political, social, and economic purposes (ex): social construction: gender, culture, religion, romantic love. Ethnicity: cultural values and norms that distinguish the members of a given group from others. It"s what you do (ex): what food you eat, what language you speak, etc. Race: differences in human phys. appearance used to categorize large numbers of people.
