BSC 251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Incus, Temporal Bone, Cochlear Duct
Document Summary
Learning outcomes: describe the olfactory organ, describe the process of stimulation of olfaction, describe the structure of the taste bud. Special senses: olfaction gustation (taste) hearing equilibrium (balance) vision. Olfaction: sense of smell olfactory organ: located in the nasal cavity. Odorants do not move through the pathway, the ap does. Olfactory pathway: olfactory tracts extend to the cerebrum, olfactory cortex (temporal lobe): perception of smell, secondary areas in frontal lobe associate smell with emotion and involved in adaptation. Connects it to memories and have an emotional response to it. Primary taste sensations include: sweet, salt, sour and bitter: umami (savory) and water. Gustatory pathway: taste sensations are conveyed to the insula (fifth lobe) via the facial and glossopharyngeal nerves and somewhat by the vagus nerve. Extrinsic eye muscles: each eye: 6 muscles that move it, motor units are small. Anatomy of the eye: wall of the eyeball consists of three layers.
