Chapter 5 Socialization
Socialization is the process by which people learn the characteristics of their group. It is how we
learn culture and norms so that we learn how to behave in society.
Agents of Socialization Religion, family, peers, work, mass media, school.
Parents are responsible for your Primary Socialization and provide you with what Sociologist
Pierre Bourdieu calls “Cultural Capital.”
Part of your Primary Socialization is gender socialization.
- Parents dress you up in boy or girl colors.
- Parents provide gender appropriate toys and activities.
- Parent behaviors provide a blueprint for masculinity or femininity.

- Parents teach manners.
- Parents provide books and computers.
- Parents guide children to attend college.
Feral Children Children who have grown up isolated from human contact at a very young age.
These children have been neglected which negatively impacts their cognitive abilities resulting in
irreversible effects.

- Children develop their sense of “self” through role playing
- Preparatory/Imitation stage children learn through imitation of “significant others.”
- Play stage children play by taking on the roles of “generalized other.”
- Games stage - understand multiple roles and understand complex games
- When children reach this stage they are able to imagine how others see them and are able
to shape their sense of “self”.
