The new national image patronage: a wealthy individual who sponsors/commissions art from art or collects already-made work iconography: the study of signs and symbols in art and their interpretation. Capital imagery: progress is achieved [for the white man] at the expense of the native population- the white man is portrayed as superior to the native americans present throughout the capitol building. War is a major subject in american art: the civil war in specific was a driving push for the impotence of memorials in the us, the revolutionary war and the two world wars were also very important. One important thing about american art is that many early american artists are unknown- many artists did not begin signing their work or taking credit for it until the late 1700s. Additionally, early american artists are typically untrained, and learned through practice and observation. Many emulate european artworks, though there are notable differences between the imitation and the originals.
