Document Summary

Compact bone: is very dense, with few internal spaces. Forms most of the shaft of the long bone such as arms and legs. The compact bone is covered by a glove like membrane, the periosteum, that nourishes the bone. Spongy bone: latticework of tiny beams and thin plates of bone with open areas between. It is found in small flat bones and at the ends of long bones. Responds to dynamic changes in minerals in the body (hemostasis) Even after reaching our full height, we continue to undergo a lifelong process of bone deposition and breakdown known as remodeling. Wolff s law: structural organization of bone reflects its function. Can change the shape and deposition of bone and activity. If the breakdown process occurs faster than the deposition of new tissue, a bone becomes weak and easy to break. The imbalance occurs in osteoporosis, a condition in which there is a progressive loss in bone density.
