Document Summary

As angiosperm seeds develop into young sporophytes, they use food stored inside of the seed. Double fertilization occurs inside of a flower. Double fertilization produces triploid endosperm and 1 embryo. Double fertilization is a synapomorphy of flowering plants. Potato fruits come from flower, which look like small cherry tomatoes. Lawn grass is a short angiosperm grass. Corn is a tall angiosperm grass that has been bred through artificial selection to make (1) more cobs or ears and (2) more seeds on each cob. One of the most abundant angiosperms grown in the usa. Nearly 100 million acres are planted in the us each year. Fertilizers, pesticides, and genetic engineering of corn have increased the yield or amount of biomass produced per year. Corn seed = kernel = what we eat. Approximately 200 fertilization events occurred to produce the kernels on this corn cob (double fertilization). Male flowers and female flowers on same plant. The corn kernel is formed after fertilization.
