Document Summary

If one organism produces two ofspring that each produces two more ofspring, the total number of grows at an exponenial rate. Organisms are capable of exponenial growth but don"t reach it because limited resources make to die or fail to reproduce: geneic variaion is enormous and ubiquitous. Geneic variaion causes individuals to difer from one another and the amount in most populaions is immense. Some types (or variants) of a trait allow increased survival and reproducion in a speciic environment than other types: geneic variants are inherited from parents whether they are beneicial or not. Natural selecion can result in an increase in the number of individuals with beneicial allele x. However, these individuals also inherited other alleles, which may or may not be beneicial: only heritable traits are subject to natural selecion. In most animals only geneic changes in the germ line dna can be passed on. Acquired traits mostly impact body cells and therefore cannot be passed on.
