BIO 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Ventral Respiratory Group, Control Of Ventilation, Blood Proteins
Document Summary
Lecture 19: neurons that generate respiratory rhythm are in medulla oblongata, chemo-sensitive responding to changes in co2 and o2. Ii: dorsal & ventral respiratory group, neurons in medulla generate rhythm, are chemo-sensitive, respond to changes in co2 & hydrogen ions, project down to motor neurons in spinal cord responsible for breathing. Increased ventilation: types: (both lead to increased alveolar ventilation [gets rid of excess co2 & increase amount of o2 in organism]) Increase in depth of breathing: nervous system monitoring co2 more than o2, can monitor acid-base balance. Iv: plasma co2, can directly stimulate peripheral chemoreceptors, only happens when there"s a significant increase in co2. Is there sufficient ventilation to provide o2 needed to provide the organism given its metabolic state & to remove co2: ventilating more than needed, hypoventilation, ventilating less than needed. I. e. breathing deeply in & out of paper bag: reusing co2, not actively getting rid of co2. Co2 content in plasma o2 content in plasma.
