Document Summary

Proteins that drive transport into mitochondria = translocons. Tom complex = translocon of outer membrane. Tim complex = translocon of the inner membrane. Oxa1 = protein transport channel facilitating transport from the matrix to inner-membrane. Mediates insertion of mitochondrial and nuclear encoded proteins from matrix into the inner-membrane. When protein molecules contain both matrix targeting sequence and oxa targeting sequence, the protein molecules will be transported to the matrix. Then oxa1 takes it to the inner membrane. Precursor protein has the matrix targeting sequence on the n-terminus of the protein. Atp hydrolysis attaches cytosolic hsc 70 onto protein. Cytosolic hsc 70 is on the protein to ensure that precursor protein stays in unfolded state only unfolded protein can be transported to the matrix. Import receptor protein in the tom complex (outer membrane) will recognize the matrix targeting sequence of the protein. Protein molecules are targeted into tom 40 (channel pore)
