Became the definition adopted by modern evolutionary genetics. A species is a group of individuals or populations that can interbreed with each other. Different species are defined by reproductive isolation. Reproductive isolation is achieved through reduced gene flow between diverging populations. Reduced gene flow can occur when diverging species are living in distinct or overlapping geographic regions.
