CHE 152 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Sodium Borohydride, Vanillin, Filter Paper
Document Summary
Moles of vanillin: 0. 0026 mol--------> (0. 4015 g/152. 15 g) Theoretical yield: 0. 4008 g vanillyl alcohol-------> 0. 0026 mol (154. 165 g vanillyl alcohol) Mass of dried purified product, actual yield: . 1054 g. At the beginning of the procedure, the vanillin and naoh were clear and did not display any color. The same continued after placing the beaker in an ice bath. After the addition of sodium borohydride the contents in the beaker turned to a light yellow color. Once the acid was added, the contents in the beaker started to turn into foamy, sudsy solution. The final mass of vanillyl alcohol is 0. 1054 g and the percent yield was 26. 29% which is relatively low. The percent yield may be low because too much solvent may have been added. Another speculation could be that when adding the hcl too much was added which led to the vanillyl alcohol decomposing in the strongly acidic solution.
