(question 10, problem set 5) Municipalities treat their water supplies for domestic and commercial uses to ensure freedom from disease and to eliminate odors and turbidity. The treatment begins with aeration to remove odors by purging dissolved gases and volatile organic compounds. Aeration oxidizes any fe+2 to fe+3 which forms fe(oh)3 and precipitates out. Additional fe+3 or al+3 ions are then added deliberately, usually as the sulfate salt, along with lime to adjust the ph. Fe(oh)3 or al(oh)3, are produced, which trap solid particles that may be suspended in the water supply. When the precipitate is collected and removed, the water is greatly clarified.
