ESE 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Simple Harmonic Motion, Damping Ratio, Frequency Domain
Document Summary
Archimedes of syracuse achieved relating the area and circumference of a circle to its radius. The motion of a sho is periodic, repeating in a sinusoidal fashion with constant amplitude (unit of repeat is 2pi) A pendulum consists of a mass attached to a string of length l and vibrates in a single harmonic motion, where g is the acceleration due to gravity. Transverse vibrations occur when the vibration is perpendicular to the direction of travel. Masses that move in the same direction have a lower frequency than those that move in opposite directions. Vibrating strings can be thought of as a mass-string system where number of masses goes to infinity. A combo of modes is called a spectrum; analysis requires a graph that shows the relationship of frequency to amplitude. The graph occurs in the frequency domain and the analysis is a fourier analysis . All systems in nature, including vibration systems, bend toward equilibrium.
