We will emphasize terms paleogene and neogene periods rather than tertiary. Tertiary still commonly used, especially in north america. Quaternary used in both classifications - pleistocene and holocene/recent. For cenozoic, should also know the epoch names in order. At 66 million years long, cenozoic is only 1. 4% of all geologic time. Cenozoic sedimentary rocks - theodore roosevelt national park, north dakota. Very extensive exposures of sedimentary and volcanic rocks date from this time. Present distribution of land and sea, climatic and oceanic circulation patterns, present-day topography resulted from processes operating during this time. Focus of geological activity in north america is in west. Quaternary was distinctive because one of few times earth was extensively glaciated. Progressive fragmentation of pangaea, accounts for present distribution of earth"s landmasses. Biological events related to relative isolation/connections among landmasses. Modern spreading ridges developed - pacific more asymmetrical than atlantic. Indian plate drifts north and collides with asia.
