Rock music emerged in 1955 due to many factors. It is not simply because of creative genius like the major artists but rather a large number of factors. 1914 - ascap: american society of composers, authors, and performers - controlled what got played on the radio and how much artists got paid. 1939 - bmi broadcast musicians incorporated - was formed and signed everyone that was excluded from ascap such as the minorities. This created competition and more diversity in what was broadcasted. Vinyl wars - the battle over the 33 1/3 vs 45 rpm - rca vs columbia. 1952 - machines able to play 78, 33 1/3, and 45 rpm. Created in order to make music a lot more available with more formats supported. There different sizes altered the rpm of these records. 33 1/3 for larger records and 45 for smaller. Opened up more am/fm frequencies and allowed for more radio stations to be created.
