Why stop at correlation: we have no formal definition of consciousness. Consciousness is linked to many mental processes. Modularity: the degree to which a system can be broken down into parts yet still function properly. Anti-modularity: no single area has been found whose neurons correspond to everything we see . Anti-holism: can have a very damaged brain and still have visual. Recall: a special case of [something] is when it unites folk and scientific modes of observation and verification. Explaining consciousness in terms of anything physical is especially problematic. Three kinds: epigenetically determined: neural firing in response to a horizontal vs vertical line, strongly conditioned: neural firing in response to letters of the alphabet. [blank: neurons spread throughout cortices, feedback loops within/without cortices, observed correlation between frequency and phase locked activity of property correlated neurons and visual awareness of property bound objects. Detection: activation in response to movement, shape, color, etc.
