Biological point of view: polar bears have to survive a harsher environment. For many types of animals, it is better to be bigger in the colder climates that exist at high latitudes and altitudes. Heftier animals have a bigger volume to surface area ratio which helps reduce heat loss. Bigger animals need bigger bones to support bigger bodies (weight).
