The basic idea of realism is that humans are selfish therefore countries and nations are selfish. Humans are concerned with their own survival and real being as well as minimizing threats to us. Nations want to survive and in order to survive, nations should have resources and should be powerful and should be able to defend themselves against other nations. Realism became very popular as a theory after both wwi and wwii. Political scientists want to be able to predict and theorize about world events and problem, which will explain how the world works. Realism is just one theory of seeing the world . Liberalism is the other theory, which is considered an alternative theory. However realism is the most common way in which people see the world. can be traced back centruies to greek literature. Self-interest is one of the first things that underlie the theory of realism.
