PSY 103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Junk Food, Ovulation, Anorexia Nervosa
Document Summary
Motivation: the process that determines the reinforcement value of an outcome. To relate biology to behavior (why do we eat?) To account for behavioral variability (why are ppl different?) To infer private states from public acts (why did you do what you did?) To assign responsibility for actions (ex - internal vs. external) Usually used in court - 1st degree murder w/intent to kill (motivation to kill) Motivated behavior is goal directed ~ controlled by drives & incentives. Drives: biological forces that provide basic goals (to eat & to drink) - driven to satisfy those needs. Homeostasis: biologically driven to maintain optimal levels of body temperature, body weight & various types of experiences. Incentives: stimuli pull us toward action (stuff in the world that we are motivated to seek) Extrinsic motivation: rewards the act might bring or punishments if might avoid (rewards are out in the world)
