Experiment: one person will be the teacher & other be learner (random) Teachers nervous laughter/smiling when giving the shock. 50% went all the way through and followed order. Professional psychiatrists thought only 10% would administer the highest shock. Experiment was about looking at reaction at orders. 1st condition - teacher could only hear when the learner pounded on the wall. 2nd condition - teacher could hear everything (yelling & talking) 3rd condition - placed in the same room. 4th condition - shock plate as punishment where hand had to be physically placed on it & the teacher would have to force the learner"s hand on the plate. >obedience reduced as victim more immediate to subject. 2nd - experimenter left laboratory and commanded subject by telephone. 3rd - tape recorder left for the subject to start. As long as command comes from legitimate authority, ppl will do whatever they are asked.
