Document Summary

Behavior therapy - begins w/a clear, well-defined goal, such as eliminating test anxiety & then attempts to achieve it through learning. Intervention via conditioning procedures (intervention that acts directly on those behaviors) Counterconditioning: a new response is conditioned to counter an old, maladaptive response. Exposure therapy (aka systematic desensitization): individuals confront the object or situation that causes anxiety; exposure creates a context for counterconditioning ~ individuals are gradually exposed to the object of their fear extinction & counterconditioning. Try to train in a relaxation response. Best behavioral therapy for phobia = systematic desensitization (take away the sensitivity systematically) learns that the danger is not as great as imagined. Have person think about the fear or have direct contact. Person w/phobia needs to be willing to do this. Flooded with the phobia - all at once - extinction all at once. At the end of it they have survived it = no more phobia.
