Serotonin levels have been found to be low in bulimic patients and may stimulate carbohydrate craving. Diets low in carbohydrates may alter brain serotonin levels. Endogenous opioids may play role in bulimia. Endogenous opioids - substances produced by the body which reduce pain sensations. Low levels may promote the craving of bulimia, and the starvation in anorexia may increase opioid levels and induce euphoric states.
