PSY 250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Morris Water Navigation Task, Explicit Memory, Spatial Memory
Document Summary
Object recognition memory: monkey studies of mtl functions. Control monkeys (without lesions)- 90% accuracy with delays of a few minutes or less. Experimental monkeys (with lesions)- normal performance at short delays, but: which part of mtl is really important for object recognition? perform at chance level with longer delays. Rhinal cortex (entorhinal & perirhinal) was often damaged along with hippocampus and amygdala. Mumby box (1989): used for rats: control rats (no lesions, amygdala and hippocampus lesions, mtl lesions (amygdala, hippocampus, and rhinal cortex) Rhinal cortex, but not hippocampus/amygdala is critical for object regnonition. Conclusions: you have to be cautious when interpreting data from amnesiacs like hm, hippocampus = memory is not always true, other mtl structures are also involved in memory. Animal studies of hippocampus in spatial memory- where things are in the environment: rats experiments: Morris water maze: hippocampus seems to play a critical role in remembering spatial locations and navigating through space.
