Document Summary
Laszlo polgar: geniuses are made, not born. trained his 3 daughters to be world champion chess masters. Chess as the favorite field of study. 1909: jose raul capablanca won 168 simultaneous chess games. But it is always the correct one. expertise is based largely on implicit knowledge. Much of expert"s advantage comes in the first few seconds of thought. Depth of search is same for experts as for novices, and about the same number of moves considered. But masters zero in on good moves. Masters rely on extensive experience (~50,000 patterns). Chess players saw configurations on board for 5 sec. Master : ~16 correct pieces after 5-sec view. Experts encode (when sensible) as meaningful chunks. Iq tests, short term memory, speed of reading, reasoning ability, attention don"t predict superior performance. Experts not better problem solvers in general. Schemas help with more than just memorizing. Experts need only a few seconds to evaluate. Extensive knowledge helps with search and perception.
