Lecture #6: sexual prejudice, prejudice directed towards an individual due to their sexual orientation (non- heterosexual behavior, identity, relationship or community, heterosexism: societal hostility towards and discrimination against non-heterosexual individuals. It"s a concealable stigma: still somewhat condoned in the u. s. It can be more complex to measure than other types or prejudice. Attitudes towards legislation: stonewall uprising, pbs documentary. Historical accounts of start of the gay rights movement in the 1960"s. Public service announcement: warning parents to make sure their kids don"t interact with older gay individuals who night turn their children gay, homosexuality considered a mental illness until 1973. Treatments: psychotherapy, aversive conditions, hormone treatments, lobotomy, law dating back to 1845: used to make arrests for cross dressing, lack of diversity. Attitudes of heterosexual men toward gay men are significantly more negative than their attitudes toward lesbian women: lesbian women often fetishized by heterosexual men, sexual prejudice research, merritt and colleagues (2013)
