Lecture #3: social learning theory, direct teaching. Individual is rewarded for behaving in a certain way: observational learning. Observing someone else being rewarded for a behavior. Influences on children"s prejudice: peers, middle schooler"s who"s friend group approved of having cross-race friendships. More interest in having such friendships: the media. Stereotypical depictions across media can unconsciously influence attitudes/stereotypes. Intergroup contact theory: prejudice grows out of a lack of personal, positive contact among members of different groups, correlational and experimental research. Piaget: first psychologist to address prejudice in children. Aboud: updated piaget"s theory to reflect research findings: cognitive developmental theory, piaget: three stages: Ages four to seven: children are self-centered. Ages seven to ten: children begin to focus on one"s own social group. Ages ten to 15: self-focus continues to decline, stages in aboud"s theory: Children develop an understanding of social categories, initially focusing on differences: leads to us versus them view of groups.
