Document Summary

Price, more black men are in prison today than enslaved in 1850 . Even though crime rates are decreasing, prison population continues to increase because of certain laws and policies. Most of the prisoners are black males and hispanic males. The ones that are doing the oppression are white males and they determine who gets imprisoned: what are consequences of gendered and racialized imprisonment, for men, women, (cid:1) children, and families? (cid:1) For those that has been imprisoned before and was let out, it is hard for them to find a job because they are labeled as felons . Being unable to get a job means they have to find other ways to make a living and that eventually leads to them going back to jail. Law is socially constructed and there are racial bias and discretion in policing. Blacks are considered as threats so they are treated differently when people checked by police. (cid:1) (cid:1)
