Motivation and Performance
Performance Management (PM)
• A set of processes and managerial behaviors that involve defining, monitoring, measuring,
evaluating, and providing consequences for performance expectations
• Make Employee-Related Decisions
• Guide Employee Development
• Send Strong Signals to Employees
• The majority of managers and organizations do a poor job of managing employee performance
due to:
o PM practices are impractical
o Focusing on only one part of the process
Step 1: Expectations and Setting Goals
Two Types of Goals
• Performance Goal
o Targets a specific end result
• Learning Goal
o Enhances your skill or knowledge
Step 2: Performance Monitoring and Evaluation
• Managers need to monitor and evaluate both progress toward the final goal and the ultimate
achievement of the goal:
o Otherwise it may be too late to take corrective action
o Also the final evaluation may not capture all relevant aspects of performance
• Monitoring Performance
o Involves measuring, tracking, or otherwise verifying progress and ultimate performance
• Evaluating Performance
o The process of comparing performance at some point in time to a previously established
expectation or goal
o Needs to be relevant and accurate
