o Method for discerning social status based on the analysis of a group internal structure
o Peer nomination technique: asking each child which group member they like most
and least
o Sociometric status: the position that someone holds within a social structure
Sociometric types:
o Popular → Liked by many, disliked by few
o 2 subtypes: prosocial and antisocial
o Physically attractive
o Possess good social cognitive skills
o Rejected
o Hostile attribution bias: tendency to judge ambiguous actions as hostile
▪ Related to aggressive behavior
o Dysfunctional parent-child interaction
▪ Affects 3 social cognitions:
• Goals, strategies and attributions
▪ Difficulty adjusting
▪ Behavioral problems
o Neglected
o Ignored by peer group
o Shy and withdrawn
o Not associated with negative outcomes
o Least stable category
o Controversial
o Liked by many, disliked by many
o Opposite of neglected
▪ Elicit strong reactions
o Often seen as sociable and as leaders
