A SOC 180 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Elder Abuse, Dependency Ratio, Ageism
Document Summary
Social scientists have recognized specific groups within the older population of the elderly, such as the young-old (65-75 years) of the frail old, who cannot carry out the basic activities of life without help. The oldest old - those ages 85 are projected to rise rapidly over the next 40 years. Demographers in the us census berea estimate that in twenty-first century the elderly will be the fastest-growing segment of the population as the huge baby boom generation enters its later years. Three factors are related to some of the problems of the aged: labeling, the concept of work as the basis of personal value and the impact of retirement, economic deprivation. Modernization- industrialization and migration have weakened the cultural roles of the elderly. So, problems of the aged are part of the larger complex of social changes known as modernization. Age stratification- which leads to age segregation and conflict.
