CHE 113 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Minutiae, Carbon Black, Loop Jump
Document Summary
Not the shape of the print, but the pattern of the ridges. Courts require 14-16 matched minutiae for a positive match. Minutiae are certain characteristics that are more specific to a person than simply the pattern. Fingerprints will remain unchanged during a person"s lifetime. Fingerprints have general ridge patterns that permit them to be systematically classified. People of african ancestry frequently have arches. Examples~ bifurcation, enclosure, spur, trifurcation, islands/dots, enclosure, bridge. Location of minutia is how forensics identify suspects with prints. Ridges enter and exit on the same side of the print. Radial- loop pointed towards the radial bone (pointing towards the thumb side of your hand) Ulna- loop pointed towards the ulna bone (pointing towards your palm side of your hand) Ridges start on one side, arches, then exits the other side. Same, except with a tent pole" in the middle. A double loop", is actually a whorl. Fingerprint analysts look for similarities within two prints.
