Species specific: animals can communicate, but their communication generally do no meet the criteria for language unique to humans. Language disorder: difficulty with symbolic aspects of language. Phonology the rules required for combining speech sounds to form syllables and words. Phonemes: the smallest sound units of meaningful speech (represented by the ipa) Each language has its own particular subset of the possible sound combinations that can be produced. Morphology internal organization of words, small units with meaning. Morphemes: smallest unit of language with meaning: free morphemes: can stand alone as a word, bound morphemes: attaches to words to change meaning (running) Syntax the rules by which sentences are made; organization of word order, word combinations (aka grammar ) Acceptable sequence of words to form sentences considers units longer than a single word. Limited number of acceptable structures; this helps listeners anticipate meaning. Semantics includes the meaning of individual words and words in combination.
