ETS 154 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Kodak, Eastmancolor, Medium Specificity
Document Summary
Technologies of image and sound production (week 1) A media hybrid - offspring of two medias: came out of the scientific discoveries and inventions that were designed for other purposes, origins in pre-20th century technology (not made specifically for movies) Black and white wasn"t really only black and white: used tinting, stencil and hand coloring, not show on color film. The company technicolor developed a three-strip process to record separate red, blue and green images on different negatives requiring a special camera (process leased to a studio)- process was cumbersome: becky sharp- first movie shot on color. By 1950s, eastman kodak introduced a single strip or monopak color press that the studios could brand and did not require special cameras. Cheaper and less cumbersome -> eastman color became the norm. By 1960s-> hollywood abandoned black and white. Aspect ratio: ratio of height of an image to its width: 1:1. 33 or academy ratio was standard in the classical hollywood era.
