Hst 111: europe 1350-1815- lecture 19: war and empire building. H4 = marine chronometer which first accurately measured time (and hence longitude) over long distance at sea. Allowed the royal navy to be able to accurately calculate where it was at any given time. God: direct religious motives for trying to reacquire contact with the lost christian kingdoms of africa and india, desire to convert heathen savages of the rest of the world. Gold/silver: spanish in particular hit the jackpot. Violence was primarily directly against the people they were trying to conquer. Increasingly less emphasis on god, not the driving force anymore. Dutch, french, english are trying to the biggest piece of the pie as possible. Quite prepared to go to war with one another to get the pie. 2nd 100 years war conflict not in europe driven by control over possessions. European colonization of the caribbean after 1600: spain"s loss of its monopoly.
