Introduction of steam power: faster and more innovate machinery, artisan system breaks down, traditional upward mobility doesn"t exist anymore, the factor is too expensive for an average person to afford, skill is no longer useful. In 1790, two cities with more than 20,000 (nyc, phl); built on trade, they are ports: 1835: 1,059 new buildings were built in nyc, new residents = men; ratio of men to women, by 1860, 43 such cities.
